One Laguna — Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico

One Laguna rendering for the Pueblo of Laguna by Miziker.

Miziker Entertainment designed a large-scale environmental artwork for the Pueblo of Laguna called One Laguna. Guests experiencing the work will acknowledge the cycles of life that mark the passage of time in this incredible, yet resource-limited landscape, which has been continually inhabited by the Laguna people for more than 700 years.

One Laguna is designed in such a way that as the rains fall during the summer months the basin at the center of the sculpture will fill, afterwards creating a mirror-like pool that reflects the sky. This catchbasin and surrounding interior walls are constructed with Corten steel, with a rust-like finish sits beautifully in the natural environment. The central basin is also fed by the nearby Cañada del Ojo and Rio Puerco, which can surge during the rainy season, feeding the Rio Grande as it moves south.

As the cycle continues and the water dissipates through evaporation and catchment release, the topographical sculpture of Mount Taylor is revealed, also known as Tsoodził by the Pueblo people as well as the Diné people, both of whom consider the mountain, like all of life, sacred.

To the people of the Pueblo of Laguna all living things, including the land itself, are connected and “one,” and to die is to return to the one-ness of the natural world.

Visitors can circle the sculpture at ground level or by an elevated walkway that gradually rises to an observation deck. This walkway and observation deck offer stunning views of this vast landscape and of Tsoodził, or the Turquoise Mountain, in the distance.
